The first thing to understand is that God never contradicts Himself. He is not the author of confusion. The passage you cite – Colossians 2:16-23 – is one of those “difficult” Bible passages where it appears that God is contradicting Himself. Therefore, when we don’t understand something in the Bible because it seems to contradict something that is said elsewhere we need to have the following approach:
- Always pray before we read or study the Word of God so that His Spirit will lead us into all truth
- Read and understand the context of the verse. This requires at a minimum reading and taking into consideration the entire chapter where that difficult verse is found, and sometimes even reading a couple of chapters before and a couple of chapters after.
